Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a chemical compound found in hemp plants. CBD is one of over 100 compounds within the plant and unlike THC, it does not produce a high. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabis compound that does not produce psychoactive effects. It is the non-psychoactive component of cannabis and has been therapeutic for many conditions including anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain and inflammation. Soji Health provides a variety of different products that carry CBD products such as CBD oil softgels, CBD gummies for anxiety or anxiet, and soothing cbd topical roll-on, that are just a few of the different types of cbd that can all can help treat these types of conditions.

The First Known Uses of Hemp and Cannabis Plant throughout HistoryThe history of CBD is very interesting and complex. The hemp and cannabis plant is indigeneous to Central Asia, though its usage spreads much wider than those regions. Archaeological records suggest its cultivation dates back as early as the end of the first ice age and appears to have been used. The earliest evidence of hemp use dates back to 10,000-12,000 BC. Hemp was used as a fiber for making ropes and clothes. Rather than using the cbd in the different forms of cbd products such as cbd soft gel pills or hemp oil cbd gummies like we use today, the plant was used more for its functional purposes because of its strong, fibrous material. Hemp was probably one of the earliest plants cultivated for textile fiber and ropes.

It’s not certain the first time cannabis or hemp would have been used for something other than textiles, but in 2737 BC there was the first documented use of cannabis-derived medicine by Chinese Emperor Sheng Nung. Rather than taking CBD oil for sleep, historical evidence suggests that he drank cannabis-infused tea. Today we have many options of CBD for sleep or to relax such as Soji Sunset Sleep Oil or Mixed Berry CBD Gummies for Sleep.

Even in the last few centuries, hemp was considered an essential crop. In France, King Henry VIII actually fined farmers for not growing industrial hemp in 1533. Almost, a hundred years later in 1619, settlers in Virginia made it illegal not to grow hemp in the United States. Hemp was a very important crop in early American history and was used in the production of clothes, paper, and other functional products. As Cotton became a more prevalent crop the production of hemp declined and its many beneficial uses were slowly forgotten in modern times until recently.

The First Discovery of CBD

It was first discovered in 1940 when researchers were looking for ways to isolate the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Despite the fact that hemp has been cultivated and used in many different forms by humanity for a very long time, we didn’t truly understand its healing properties until the last century.

With the advancement of science in both biological and organic chemistry, we’re now in a much better position to break down the molecular make-up of the cannabis & hemp plant, including CBD. CBD, an abbreviation of cannabidiol, was first discovered in 1940 by Roger Adams. He isolated both CBD and another cannabinoid called CBN (cannabinol) from the hemp plant, and hypothesized about the existence of the psychoactive chemical THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It wasn’t until 1964 that THC was isolated by Raphael Mechoulam—one of the leading names in cannabis science. It was through Mechoulam’s work that the properties of both CBD and THC were identified and we are able to use them specifically for what treatments we are needing them for. For people who don’t want to get high and just receive the healing benefits of Hemp or Cannabis derived CBD oil, it is now accessible for them to do so.
